The collection consists of photographic prints and negatives taken by Patti Parsons, administrative assistant to SIO Directors William A. Nierenberg and Edward A. Frieman, which document groundbreaking ceremonies, ship dedications, retirement parties and other activities involving the Office of the Director during the period 1976-1992. The collection includes images of Edward A. Frieman, William A. Nierenberg, Jeffery D. Frautschy, George L. Matson, Roger Revelle, Cecil Green and others. Dedication of R/V Robert Gordon Sproul, San Diego visit of R/V Alcyone, groundbreaking for the SIO pier, birthday parties for William Nierenberg and Roger Revelle, retirement parties for Jeffery Frautschy, George Matson, and Alexandra Dean, annual Scripps beach picnics and other events are documented in these photographs. The images also include fashion photographs of Vogue models with Dr. Nierenberg. The collections include photographs of the 1988 visit of Vice President George Bush to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
